Abstract This work presents a method to digitalize damage in concrete bridge decks in a standardized way and to integrate it with a Building Information Modeling (BIM)-based bridge model so as to build an information model for bridge maintenance. Damage information for each member in a maintenance information model was converted into a Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) file to assess the condition of bridge parts according to damage level. The method proposes classifying the type of defect and its properties, and defining ten representative defect elements that mainly occur in concrete decks to model objects. We developed a program code that can extract required information from a COBie file to support maintenance decisions as well as a technique to link and manage information about damaged objects in bridges using a proposed identification code. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed damage information management and utilization methodology was verified by conducting a condition assessment on a concrete deck of an actual bridge in which varied damage was present. Based on the results of this study, expansion into the field of carbon fiber reinforced polymer repair and reinforcement can be expected along with the evaluation of the damage level of aging concrete bridges.
