Abstract The primary objective of the present study is to compensate for the maximum longitudinal reinforcement ratio specified in KCI 2017 for lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) beams considering the flexural ductility. The displacement ductility ratio of reinforced concrete (RC) beams was estimated from the load-displacement relationship, determined by 2-dimensional nonlinear analysis. The analytical results showed that the flexural ductility of RC beams decreases with decreases in concrete unit weight (). This trend was more notable with increases in the compressive strength of concrete and the decreases in the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. From extensive parametric study, the compensation factor for maximum longitudinal reinforcement ratio of KCI 2017 can be proposed to be with regard to the flexural ductility of LWAC beams, equivalent to that of the counterpart normal-weight concrete beams, where (=2,300 kg/m3) is the reference value for concrete unit weight.
