Abstract This study evaluated the effect of dead load in the design and evaluation of concrete breakout strength in bridge bearings. For this, the bearings with insufficient seismic performance in Korean highway bridges were analyzed to determine the ratio of the dead load to designed seismic load. Then, representative bridges were selected for numerical analysis. Compared with the existing evaluation equation, the analysis results showed a slight difference of approximately 0.6 %. The verified numerical model indicated a significant increase in concrete breakout strength and a decrease in displacement with an increase in dead load. When accounting for the action of the dead load, the concrete breakout strength of the representative bridge bearing was approximately 1.8 to 2.0 times the concrete breakout strength obtained from the current evaluation equation.
