Abstract The shear crack angle of reinforced concrete (RC) members significantly affects their shear strengths. Design codes KCI, ACI, EC, and CSA evaluate the shear crack angle differently. Although there have been numerous studies on shear crack angle, only a few of them have directly reported it through experiments. In this study, the shear crack angle was investigated by analyzing 244 existing test specimens that failed in shear. The factor that had the greatest impact on the crack angle was the ratio of concrete compressive strength to shear reinforcement ratio. As the amount of shear reinforcement increased, the crack angle also increased. However, the effect of the amount of shear reinforcement on the crack angle did not exhibit a clear trend compared to that estimated from a plastic truss model. The crack angle of 45 degrees specified in the KCI design code generally overestimated the actual crack angle, while the EC2-04 code underestimated it. The minimum crack angle of 22 degrees in the EC2-04 code was too low.
