Abstract In this study, particle size and dispersion stability of amorphous nano-silica with various synthesis processes were analyzed, and the effects of these factors on bond performance between nano-silica grafted carbon fabrics and cementitious composites were evaluated. Test results showed that the particle size distribution and dispersion stability of synthesized nano-silica were affected by various factors. Thus, the influencing parameters have to be carefully controlled to synthesize amorphous, monodisperse nano-silica with desired particle size and morphology. The particle size distribution and dispersion stability of the nano-silica showed direct correlations with grafting degree of the particles on the surface of the carbon fabrics; however, there was no clear correlation with bond performance of the carbon fabrics embedded in cementitious composites. Reasonable explanations of these phenomena could be established based on the analysis of the spatial features of the surface, such as roughness parameters. The results obtained from this study suggest a direction for the development of nano-silica grafted carbon fabrics to effectively improve their bond performance with cementitious composites.
