Abstract In this study, the shear strength of prestressed hollow core slabs (HCS) was investigated. Eighteen HCS specimens with different cross-sections and effective depths were tested under four-point loading. The test results showed that the ratios of the test strength to calculated strength (i.e., predicted by ACI and KCI design codes) ranged from 1.20 to 2.64, which indicates that current design codes underestimate the shear strength of prestressed HCS members. For further investigation, the shear strength of HCS specimens was evaluated using a strain-based shear strength model, and a coefficient considering the effect of cross-sectional shape was proposed. The validity of the proposed method was verified by comparisons with the test results of this and existing studies.
