Title Peculiar Alignment of Carbon Fibers in a Mortar Brick

Abstract The carbon fiber arrangements on the cracked surfaces can be grouped into four patterns such as uprootedness, avulsion, separation and dividedness. Among these four patterns, the numbers of the uprooted fiber bundles from the mortar and the divided mortar parts enable to explain the reason why the mortar brick samples with carbon fiber contents of 1.0 % in volume is showing the highest flexural strength among those of 0.5 %, 1.5 % and 2.0 %. The number of the uprootedness fibers is reducing but those of the other three patterns are increasing as the percentage increases. This percentage increasing makes the cracked surfaces bumpier with deeper valleys and higher hills, and at the same time, the number of the avulsion, separation and dividedness to increase. This leads to increase the numbers and sizes of air pockets formed by folding, overlapping and clustering of fibers, and to decrease the cohesiveness of the concrete. As the results, the flexural strength decreases as the percentage increases.
