Abstract The purpose of this study is to evaluate the shear friction performance on the horizontal interface for composite PC beams. Eight specimens, designed with variables such as stirrup spacing, clamping stress, and interface location, were constructed and tested. Four specimens with interface in tensile region failed by horizontal shear when the interface horizontally slipped. Meanwhile, four specimens with interface in compressive region showed full flexural strength of composite section without interface slippage. Based on these results, it is recommended that the shear friction strength of a composite PC beam should be calculated by considering the interface location. Prediction by ACI or PCI shear friction design method using friction coefficient of 1.0 can conservatively estimate the shear friction strength for composite beams with interface in compressive region. However composite beams with interface in tensile region deteriorate shear friction strength, which means a good estimation will be done by ACI shear friction method using friction coefficient of 0.6.
