Abstract This study examines the physical and electrical properties of mortar mixed with boron compounds. The adopted boron compounds classified as acid, slightly alkaline and strongly alkaline with respect to the pH are acidic boric acid, alkali borax, and high alkali borax. The electrical properties of mortar are evaluated experimentally by measuring the zeta potential, and the physical properties by measuring the slump, air content, setting time and compressive strength per age. The measured zeta potentials revealed that the absolute value of the zeta potential is generally higher for the specimens mixed with boron compounds than for the basic specimen made of ordinary mortar. Accordingly, this resulted in the measurement of increased slump flow and setting time for the specimens mixed with boron compounds. Loss of the compressive strength was generally observed regardless of the type of boron compound. Consequently, difference in the zeta potential occurred according to the type of boron, the composition of the compounds and the pH environment during the admixing of the boron compounds. This difference influenced the physical properties of mortar like its slump flow and setting time. Therefore, it seems advisable to determine the optimal amount of boron compound in the fabrication of mortar.
