Abstract It is expected that the application of existing seismic retrofitting methods will be active as the national project for retrofitting major public facilities such as school buildings in Korea are actively underway. However, many of the existing seismic retrofitting methods have not been properly verified for the validity of their design process and structural performance. Before applying those seismic retrofitting methods to existing building structures, it is necessary to analytically or experimentally investigate their performance and the risk by the application of those methods during earthquakes. In this study, a static cyclic loading test was conducted to examine the improvement in the seismic performance of non-seismic detailed RC frames by applying the existing eccentric rotational channel-type damping system (ERC damping system). As a result of the experiment, the maximum strength and ductility capacity of the RC frames with the ERC damping system were improved by a minimum of 2 times and 1.7 times, respectively, compared with a non-seismic detailed RC frame. It was also observed that the amount of energy dissipated in the RC frames with the ERC damping system increased by a minimum of 6 times, and the number and width of cracks of the columns greatly reduced compared with a non-seismic detailed RC frame. Test results revealed that the ERC damping system is effective in enhancing the seismic performance and in changing the failure mode of existing non-seismic detailed RC structures.
