Abstract This study investigated the hydration reaction of GGBFS with a substitute using X-ray diffraction based quantitative analysis methods. To overcome the limitation of X-ray diffraction technique of quantifying the amount of amorphous material, internal standard and PONKCS methods were adapted and compared. There was negligible hydration reaction on the used GGBFS reacted with water so strength development was not noticeable. However, when calcium hydroxide was used to activate the GGBFS, the compressive strength of 50 MPa at 28 days was achieved owing to significant hydration reaction. Several reaction phenomena of the consumption of calcium hydroxide and productions of chemically bound water and calcium carbonate, were successfully calculated as chemical reaction progresses. However, due to the existence of different types of amorphous materials within the raw material and hydration product (i.e., C-S-H), the degree of GGBFS consumption could not be directly calculated.
