Abstract Reinforced concrete (RC) shear wall has been widely adopted as a major structural member in the main building of the nuclear power plant because it offers great resistance against lateral loads induced by earthquakes. Since it is required for on RC shear wall to have sufficient energy dissipation capacity and to prevent potential brittle failure, it is necessary to understand the inelastic deformation and stiffness degradation phenomena accumulated by severe earthquakes. To adequately evaluate the inelastic deformation and energy dissipation capacity adequately, an analytical model for RC shear wall subject to general in-plane shear loading, including dynamic excitation, is presented in this study. Seismic responses of isolated shear wall specimens are obtained from nonlinear dynamic analyses and compared with experimental results for the verification of the developed numerical model. From the response comparison, the effect of nonlinear hysteresis behavior is reviewed briefly.
