Abstract In this study, an analytical study for effect of a/d and effective depth on shear strength of RC beams was carried out using meso-scale finite element method. Prior to the analysis, a method of defining concrete as a meso-scale composite and multi-phase was described. The concrete was assumed to be a composite with three phases of aggregate, cement matrix, and ITZ, and the material properties of each phase were applied. The shear failure behavior of RC beams was analyzed using the constructed analytical model, and the effects of a/d and effective depth was confirmed through this analysis. In addition, the performance of the analytical model were evaluated by comparing the analytical results with the experimental results. It is confirmed that the application of the meso-scale size analysis model is sufficient for the study of the occurrence and progress of shear and bending cracks.
