Abstract Using artificial lightweight aggregates produced from expanded bottom ash and dredged soil, this study prepared 15 mixes to evaluate the effect of the natural sand content on the mechanical properties of concrete. Test parameters investigated were the design compressive strength of concrete and natural sand content for replacing the lightweight fine aggregates. The modulus of elasticity and rupture measured in the present lightweight aggregate concrete (LWAC) specimens were compared with the predictions obtained from the design equations recommended in the korean building code (KBC). Values of mechanical properties (including modulus of elasticity and rupture, tensile strength, shear friction strength, and bond strength) normalized by the square root of compressive strength tended to increase with the increase in natural sand content. Thus, the replacement of lightweight fine aggregate by natural sand was favorable for enhancing the tensile resistance capacity, shear friction strength, and bond strength with a reinforcing bar of LWAC. When compared with the predictions by KBC, the modulus of elasticity was lower in the present LWAC specimens whereas higher modulus of rupture was obtained.
