Abstract The KCI-12 code and KSCE Bridge design code use different safety factors. For flexural design, it has been found that the material factor used in the KSCE Bridge design code is more reasonable than the strength reduction factor used in the KCI-12 code. In this study, change of design shear strength by application of material factor was evaluated. Shear strengths of 784 RC beams without shear reinforcement and 469 RC beams with shear reinforcement were compared with shear strengths calculated by applying the strength reduction factor and material factor. The analytical results showed that in the case of applying the material factor and strength reduction factor to the shear strengths of RC beams without shear reinforcement, the coefficient of variation of the design shear strength ratio did not change; only the mean value changed. For the RC beams with shear reinforcement, both the coefficient of variation and the mean value changed. However, the difference between the two coefficients of variation was not significant. Since the safety factor is related to the accuracy of the shear strength evaluation equation, it is necessary to comprehensively evaluate the relationship between the shear strength equation and the safety factor.
