Abstract Recently, an alternative design method for lateral confinement of the special boundary elements of special structural walls was added to KBC 2016. Specifically, an overlapping hoop consisting of a combination of U-bar and cross tie is used for lateral confinement of the longitudinal reinforcements instead of a closed hoop to improve economic feasibility and constructability, which is based on the concept of a performance-based structural design. For performance-based design, it is very important to check whether the pre-defined performance goal of the structure has been reached through a nonlinear analysis. In this study, a cyclic loading test was performed on seven shear walls to understand the correlation between factors affecting the behavior of the shear wall and nonlinear behavior characteristics and to accumulate data for a nonlinear analysis. The experimental variables are installation of special boundary elements, the magnitude of the gravity load acting on the section of the wall, and lateral confinement spacing for longitudinal reinforcing bars on the special boundary element, and the experimental results are compared and analyzed in terms of deformation capacity, strength and stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity.
