Abstract This study investigated the durability performance of concrete to which Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was applied for penetrating water repellency. The results of the penetration depth test by application method confirmed that IM (immersion) exhibited the most enhanced performance and SM (spray) also showed enhanced performance compared to plain concrete, this is, the concrete without PDMS application. Evaluation of the penetrating water repellency revealed that, the PDMS applied concrete satisfied the requirement of less than 0.1 presented by KS F 4930, indicating excellent penetrating water repellency. From test of the resistance to chloride ion penetration, superior salt-resistance was shown in comparison to plain concrete, by the application of PDMS. Experimental results of SM and IM showed more than twofold improved salt-resistance compared to plain concrete. It was also confirmed that the application of PDMS resulted in enhanced frost resistance. As a result of testing combined deterioration, surface scaling occurred on plain concrete, whereas scaling was not observed on the concrete surface to which PDMS was applied, indicating superior combined-deterioration resistance achieved by the application of PDMS.
