Abstract When concrete has surface cracks, chloride diffusion coefficient increases due to additional intrusion of chloride ions. In the work, chloride diffusion coefficients in a steady state condition are evaluated in concrete for a nuclear power plant considering induced crack width (0.0∼1.0 mm) at the age of 56 days and 180 days. With extension of the curing period, increasing strength ratios are below 10.0 % and, diffusion coefficients significantly decrease. For N grade concrete at the age of 56 days, the increasing gradient of 5.38 with crack width is observed while it is reduced to 2.38 at the age of 180 days. For H grade concrete, it decreases from 1.82 to 0.92 with extension of curing time. The effect of cracks on increasing diffusion coefficient is evaluated to be smaller in H grade concrete since low diffusion in a sound area with high strength has a governing effect on diffusion in the representative cracked concrete volume.
