Title Strength Evaluation of Welded Lap Splices of 19 and 29 mm Normal Reinforcing Steel Bars

Abstract The strengths of welding connecting reinforcing bars have been evaluated. The test variables include the welded lap length as the main variable, the steel grade, the bar diameter, and preheat. Among 108 specimens, 96 specimens with welded lap lengths of 2 db, 4 db, and 6 db failed by a fracture of the welding material and 22 specimens with a welded lap length of 8 db failed by a bar fracture. The splice strengths of the specimens, that failed by a fracture of welding materials, increase as the welded lap length increases because the strength of the welding materials governed the failure. Student t-tests on the splice strengths show that the steel grade and bar diameter do not affect the splice strength. All specimens that failed by fracture of the welding materials have higher strength than the calculations by KBC 2016. A model to predict the splice strength has been developed from a regression analysis of the test results. The predicted strength of the splice with the welded lap length of 8 db is 125 % higher than the specified yield strength of reinforcing bars required by KCI 2012.
