Abstract The distribution and magnitude of the prestressing force of tendons in prestressed concrete (PSC) structures has a significant effect on safety and serviceability. However, attempts to measure the internal prestressing force using conventional electrical resistance strain gauges do not usually lead to reliable results due to inaccuracy of the sensors and damaged sensors. In order to overcome these drawbacks, the Smart Strand system has been developed using optical fiber sensors in this study and was applied to long-span PSC girder bridges to measure the change of the prestressing force distribution according to the construction sequence. Also, the theoretical prestressing force distribution obtained by accounting for short-term and long-term prestress losses was compared with the measured data. Although the theoretical distribution was similar in trend to the actual distribution, the values showed a notable difference. Several possible causes of the difference were investigated. Some assumptions made in the calculation of prestress losses, including friction coefficients, could be improved to better agree with realistic structural behavior by using the measured data of the Smart Strand.
